A ‘smile in 24 hours’ may refer to placing a provisional prosthesis after surgery in selected patients. It does not mean the implant has healed or everyone can receive a final prosthesis within that time. Individual assessment and implant stability are essential.

Loading and restoration are not synonyms

ITI consensus defines immediate loading as connecting a prosthesis in occlusion within the first week. It distinguishes this from immediate restoration out of occlusion. Ask exactly what will be placed, when, and whether it is provisional or final.

Eligibility depends on assessment

Bone quality and quantity, gum health, initial stability and habits can influence the decision. The dentist must determine whether infection treatment or additional procedures are needed. Another protocol may be more appropriate if conditions are not met.

Healing needs follow-up

Even with an early prosthesis, biological healing continues. Follow dietary and hygiene instructions and scheduled checks. Ask about phases leading to final restoration and what to do for mobility, persistent pain or concerning changes.

Questions for your consultation

  • Will the prosthesis be provisional or final?
  • What conditions must be met for immediate loading?
